A stage where every note becomes light

Industrial design for an electronic drum show by TETA Music, with Cochavi & Klein: a 330 cm stage, rings that move while the drummer plays, lighting synced to every drum, and a structure that breaks down into three parts.

A kinetic and interactive electronic drum show · TETA Music · 2019

Cochavi & Klein, the lighting company working with TETA Music, came with a sketch: a drummer inside a circle, with drums, electronics and lighting around him, and asked us to design it. There was no precedent for a stage that moves around a drummer while he plays, so we started with scoping, put together a team with an expert for each field, and cracked the questions one by one.

In short: E-DRUM is a kinetic and interactive electronic drum show for TETA Music, with industrial design by Idan Herbet and a team with an expert for each field, over half a year: a 330 cm stage with rings that move while the drummer plays, pistons hidden in the stage, connectors developed specially for the drums and the LEDs, lighting and cold sparks from inside the stage, and all of it breaks down into three parts that fit in a van. Winner of the LIT Lighting Design Awards 2019 in two categories and the A' Design Award Gold 2020.

What we did

A kinetic structure for an electronic drum show

330cm stage diameter
3parts the stage breaks down into, which fit in a van
6months of daily work with the team
Three cracks

What we cracked: a show that moves, lights up and fits in a van

01

A person inside a circle

From the first sketch, a person with a circle around him, we built a team with an expert for each field: drummer, lighting designer, metalworker, video, LEDs, electrics, production, music and programming. Together we cracked the questions: what the drummer needs to play 360 degrees while everything around him moves, how you make a synchronised performance between a person and a machine, and what material to use.

02

Rings, pistons and connectors we invented

The rings were built from rolled profiles, and the pistons that move them while the drummer plays are hidden inside the stage. To make all of this hold, we developed our own connectors: for fixing the LEDs around each electronic drum, for fixing the drums to the rings, and for fixing the pistons to the rings themselves.

03

Light from inside the stage

The cold sparks are hidden inside the stage, lights under the drummer light him from below, and another ring of spotlights surrounds it all. Every drum is outlined in RGBW neon flex under DMX control, and the show is synced by timecode and MIDI notes, so every hit triggers its own light.

How it started

Half a year, every day, one team

For half a year we worked every day, from the meetings at TETA's studio to the assembly. And the show was built to go on the road: all the drums, the lighting and the mechanics fit inside the stage itself, which breaks down into three parts and fits in a van, easy to assemble and take down at every show around the country.

This is how it looked along the way: the rolled rings, the connectors we developed for the drums and the LEDs, the LEDs around each drum, the frame under construction, a first test with a person inside the circle, and the rendering of the stage.

The awards

A gold award, and two international lighting awards

E-DRUM won the gold award at the A' Design Award in the lighting products and projects category, in the 2019 and 2020 competition, with design no. 94479. In December 2020 it was shown at the winners' exhibition in Xi'an, China. Before that it won at the LIT Lighting Design Awards 2019 in two categories.

FAQ

Questions about E-DRUM

What is E-DRUM?

E-DRUM is a kinetic and interactive electronic drum show: a round stage 3.3 metres across, where every note the drummer plays becomes light, and the structure itself changes shape as he plays, creating a dynamic environment around him.

What was Studio Herbet's role?

Idan Herbet was the show's industrial designer: from the first sketch by Cochavi & Klein and TETA Music, through scoping and putting together a team with an expert for each field, to designing the rings, the pistons, the specially developed connectors and the stage that breaks down into three parts, together with blacksmith Efi Schwartz and concept designer Omer Israeli.

Can the show be put on anywhere?

Yes. All the drums, the lighting and the mechanics fit inside the stage, which breaks down into three parts and fits in a van, so it can be assembled and taken down at every show, outdoor shows included.

How is the lighting synced with the drums?

Every drum is outlined in RGBW neon flex with dynamic pixel control over DMX, and the whole show is synced by timecode and MIDI notes, so every hit on a drum triggers its own light in real time.

What awards did E-DRUM win?

E-DRUM won the LIT Lighting Design Awards 2019 in two categories, interactive lighting products and LED lighting products and fixtures, and the A' Design Award 2020 Gold in the lighting products and fixtures category.

How do you design something with no precedent?

You start with scoping, and break the idea down into questions. With E-DRUM there was no precedent for a stage that moves around a drummer while he plays, so we put together a team with an expert for each field, from a drummer and a lighting designer to a metalworker, an electrician and a programmer, and cracked the questions one by one: what the drummer needs to play 360 degrees, how you sync a person and a machine, and what material to use.

Why does a show need an industrial designer?

Because someone has to bring all the parts together into one body that works again every night. With E-DRUM that meant rolled rings, pistons hidden in the stage, connectors we developed specially for the drums and the LEDs, and a stage that breaks down into three parts and fits in a van.

What does a drum show have to do with an architectural project?

It is exactly the same work: combining lighting, mechanics and structure in one element, coordinating many professionals under one address, and thinking ahead about transport, assembly and maintenance. The only difference is that this element goes on stage instead of hanging in a lobby.

Have an element that nobody knows how to build yet?

The element you imagined gets built the way you planned it, with a budget and a timeline you know in advance, and one address from the rendering to the installation. In a free 30 minute call we go over what you sent, and you leave with a direction: what can be built, from what material, and what the next step is.
